The origins of tiramisu trace back to the Veneto region of Italy, specifically the city of Treviso, in the 1960s or 1970s. The most accepted version of its creation credits the restaurant Le Beccherie in Treviso. According to this story, chef Roberto Linguanotto and pastry chef Ada Campeol created the first tiramisu. 

Campeol had recently given birth and, inspired by the Italian custom of giving new mothers a mixture of eggs and sugar for energy, they experimented, adding mascarpone, coffee-soaked ladyfingers, and cocoa powder. They called it “tiramisu,” which means “pick me up” in Italian, reflecting its energizing ingredients.

From Local Delight to Global Fame

Initially, tiramisu was a regional specialty in Veneto. As it gained popularity, chefs across Italy started making their own versions. In the 1980s, as Italian cuisine gained global recognition, tiramisu emerged as a signature dessert. It became popular in Italian restaurants across Europe and the United States, known for its sophisticated yet simple preparation.

Tiramisu’s global fame grew due to its versatility. It was easy to recreate at home with simple ingredients like ladyfingers, mascarpone cheese, coffee, and cocoa powder.
